Fruiting Bodies 2023
The ceramic and mixed media work in Fruiting Bodies explores gender and sexuality through the lens of the reproductive stage of the Fungi kingdom, finding humor through texture, color, form and language. The work has a playful quality with an underlying sense of something uncanny due to the abstraction of fruiting body forms and the scale of the work, which creates a distinct parallel to our human environment.
Research of the Fungi kingdom, film and feminism have led to a hyperbolic representation of my own feelings of sexuality and gender in the work. Together the objects in the gallery act as puzzle pieces for our brains, ranging from pleasure to discomfort, to form a narrative examining natural habitat, specimen, observation, obsession and collection.
